Claudine Toutoungi is the winner of the Ledbury Munthe Poetry Prize for Second Collections.
According to the judges, Two Tongues is often hilarious, frequently offbeat and utterly original. Her control of language, her wit, her dexterity of line and image… revolve around her subjects with a maturity and elegance that isn’t afraid to step into the lyric spotlight but that rarely does…more often what we see in Toutoungi is a masterclass in language and form, a sense of adventure and willingness to risk, in a voice that is brimming with intelligence and humour.’
Emma Purshouse is the third prize winner of the 2021 National Poetry Competition. She is a freelance writer, performance poet and slam champion. Her recent poetry collection, is Close. ‘Her humour, high spirits, imagination and insights are reminiscent of Liverpool poets McGough, Patten and Henri… here’s a refreshing and original voice from a sometimes fantastic Black Country – a place where it’s perfectly possible to spot a ‘Mermaid on the number 3 bus’.
This is an in person and livestreamed event.
Tickets £10
Quiet Compere events are unique. There are no lengthy introductions to poets, no-one is designated as ‘top-of-the-bill’ – all performers considered equal in Sarah’s eyes. Each line-up boasts a varied and diverse mix of poets, ranging from established local poets, some new to the scene who are ready to stun audiences with their talent, plus a generous sprinkling of nationally well-known poets and performers.
Emma will be taking part in the online launch event for ‘The Presence and the Dream’. This new anthology includes 10 years’ winners of the Pre-Raphaelite Soc poetry prize!
About this event
In The presence and the dream, Serena Trowbridge (Chair of the Pre-Raphaelite Society) and Sarah Doyle (the Society’s Poet-in-Residence) have selected their favourite poems from ten years of the Pre-Raphaelite Society Poetry Prize and anthologised these alongside some of Sarah’s commissioned poems written over the last decade. The result is an immersive collection of rich, sensory, evocative poems inspired by a wide variety of Pre-Raphaelite art and artists. Please join us to celebrate the book’s launch and to hear readings from many of the poets published here.
Tickets are available from the eventbrite link.

About this event
Mouthpieces is a celebration of the spoken word in its many forms inviting feature artists from across the UK to flex their wordsmith muscles to the North Birmingham community. We’re thrilled to be bringing Dreadlock Alien, Jemima Hughes, Priyanka Joshi and Emma Purshouse to perform specially commissioned Shakespeare-inspired spoken word pieces at this event. Open mic slots will be available on the night – you’re welcome to get up on stage with your own piece or something written by Shakespeare!
Please note: At Mouthpieces we don’t censor any of the performers so there may be some strong language and adult themes.
Mouthpieces is a community live arts event produced by local artists Joe Cook, Vafa Motamedi and Claire Bennett.

About this event
Join performance poets Emma Purshouse and Steve Pottinger for an afternoon workshop designed to increase confidence in sharing your poems/monologues/stories with an audience, including the opportunity to practise your mic technique in a supportive environment. Bring along something to write with and on, plus three or four poems or other pieces that you’d be happy to read aloud (they don’t need to have been written by you, but it would be great if they are linked somehow to Shakespeare).
This workshop, part of Shakespeare in Sutton – FOLIO’s fun festival for all, is aimed at anyone aged 16 or over. It will be fun, highly interactive and engaging! Participants will have the opportunity to perform their pieces (including if they are written by other people), if they wish to do so, at the Shakespeare in Sutton spoken word event, Mouthpieces, on Friday 29th April at 8pm at Highbury Theatre. Participants may choose to attend the festival’s morning workshop focussing on writing skills (rather than performance skills) if they wish to do so though this will require separate booking.
